Ahh the ole Avocado. Notorious for it’s creamy texture and as the base ingredient in the dip praised by many, Guacamole. The popularity of this ingredient has grown significantly throughout the years since people are discovering its versatility and healthy fat content. In fact, it was reported that in 2016 Americans consumed 1,150 MILLION kilos of avocado. Holy Guacamole! But, perhaps the strangest result of the increase in demand for Avocados in the U.S., is its direct affect on the citizens of Mexico. Puebla, Mexico has been one of the main producers of the most popular variety of avocado exported to the U.S., the “hass”. Ironically, Mexicans are now finding it cheaper to buy avocados outside of their country. Something the city once produced in abundance is quickly becoming more of a luxury item. It is estimated that avocado consumption has decreased from 9kg per year to about 7.5kg. The increasing demand in the U.S. has caused the price of avocados in Mexico to rise to about 80 pesos which is equivalent to their typical minimum wage. This is a difficult reality for many, since avocados are a staple in most traditional Mexican dishes. It’s hard for us to form the connection between what we consume and where it comes from. You see, when we hear phrases like “ guac will cost extra”, We boil it down to basic corporate greed and neglect the real issue at hand. We have this tendency to separate the labor put into producing goods and the goods themselves. Which may explain why we are so quick to accept products imported from Mexico but when it comes to accepting people, there is a lot more hesitation. In other words, It seems as though Mexicans are treated as commodities. Overworked and under compensated all to simply keep up with global demand. It is crazy to think of how much a group of peoples lives can shift just to satisfy our own desires.
